Since 1986, the Esplugues City Council has organized the Vila d’Esplugues Ceramics Award with the aim of vindicating ceramics as an artistic expression. In 1998, the Ceramics Biennial took the name of Angelina Alós Tormo, one of the great ceramists linked to the city of Esplugues de Llobregat.
After almost 40 years, it has become one of the oldest ceramics biennials in Spain. This year we present the 22nd edition, with such a large participation that it consolidates its international projection.
The 36 finalist pieces are exhibited in the rooms of the Can Tinturé Museum, with a wide range of styles, materials and techniques. An exhibition such as the one that can be visited in Esplugues is an opportunity to discover contemporary ceramics as a complex and dynamic creative tool. The artistic language of ceramics allows us to give or even seek answers to the unknowns and conflicts of the current world or of the history of humanity.
The organic origin of the raw material of ceramics—earth—marks the works of many artists and gives rise to pieces that dialogue about the climate crisis or the relationship of the human species with the planet.
In other cases, the finalist artists work in a more technical line that seeks the physical limits of the material. Thus, there are works with impossible shapes or balances, experiments with enamels and materials that become never-before-seen textures.
