The exibition

Lluís Domènech i Montaner’s architecture approached as a scenario.

Domènech i Montaner saw his architectural pieces as spaces in which to create or reproduce imaginary scenes or landscapes, often inspired by literature.

In his designs, the architectural spaces, outer walls, entrance halls, staircases and rooms became scenarios where the story takes precedence over the decoration.

These settings were brought to life through the decorative arts. Mosaic, ceramics and sgraffito show scenes steeped in beauty and images which take us to imaginary places as if they were a theatrical set.

He did this with the help of numerous colleagues who took his ideas and transferred them to an architectural scale. They included Lluís Brú i Salelles and the Pujol i Bausis ceramics factory in Esplugues de Llobregat along with renowned artists of the period such as Ramon Casas and Joaquim Mir.

The exhibition is curated by Marta Saliné i Perich, PhD in Art History and a specialist in Catalan Art Nouveau mosaic in Lluís Domènech i Montaner’s work and also in mosaicist Lluís Brú i Salelles and his output.

In 2023, Marta Saliné in conjunction with the Esplugues de Llobregat Museums presented at the coupDefouet International Congress the paper “Lluís Domènech i Montaner. The Power of the Scenario” which is the basis for this exhibition.

The four main buildings in the exhibition are:  The Institut Pere Mata and Casa Navàs in Reus and the Fonda Espanya and Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona.
